WhatsApp Status Privacy Tips: Control Who Sees Your Updates
Your WhatsApp Status is visible to your contacts by default. But what if you only want certain people to see your updates? WhatsApp offers powerful privacy controls that many users don't know about. In this guide, we cover everything from basic privacy settings to advanced techniques for controlling your Status visibility.
Understanding WhatsApp Status Privacy Options
WhatsApp provides three main privacy options for your Status: My Contacts, My Contacts Except..., and Only Share With.... These are accessible from Settings → Privacy → Status. Each option gives you different levels of control over who sees your updates.
My Contacts
This is the default setting. Everyone in your WhatsApp contacts list can see your Status updates. Note that anyone who has your phone number saved in their address book will appear as a contact, even if you have never messaged them on WhatsApp.
My Contacts Except...
This option allows you to hide your Status from specific contacts while keeping it visible to everyone else. This is useful for hiding your updates from colleagues, family members, or ex-partners. You can select individual contacts or entire groups. The excluded contacts will not know they have been excluded — your Status simply will not appear in their Status list.
Only Share With...
This is the most restrictive option. You select only the specific contacts you want to share your Status with. Nobody else will see it. This is ideal for sharing personal updates with a close circle of friends or family while keeping it private from everyone else.
How to Change Your Status Privacy
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots menu (Android) or the Settings tab (iOS).
- Go to Settings → Privacy → Status.
- Select your preferred option: My Contacts, My Contacts Except..., or Only Share With...
- If selecting the latter two options, choose the contacts you want to exclude or include.
- Changes take effect immediately for any new Status updates you post.
Advanced Privacy Tips
Use Custom Lists for Different Audiences
WhatsApp does not natively support multiple privacy lists, but you can simulate this by using the "Only Share With..." option and creating different groups in your contact list. For example, you could have a "Close Friends" label and an "Acquaintances" label, and alternate between them depending on the content of your Status.
Disable Status Read Receipts
You can disable read receipts for Status in Settings → Privacy → Status → "Show read receipts." When disabled, people can still see your Status, but you won't be able to see who viewed it. However, this also means you won't be able to see view counts on your own Status.
Block Specific Contacts
If you want to completely prevent someone from seeing your Status (and also prevent them from contacting you on WhatsApp), you can block them. Go to the chat with that contact, tap the three dots menu, and select "Block." Blocked contacts cannot see your Status, profile photo, or last seen.
Be Mindful of Screenshots
WhatsApp does not notify you when someone takes a screenshot of your Status. While WhatsApp has screenshot notifications for View-Once media, regular Status updates do not have this protection. Never post sensitive personal information (addresses, phone numbers, financial details) in your Status, even if you have restricted visibility.
Privacy and Media Uploads
When you use ClearHDStatus to optimize your videos, your media is processed temporarily and permanently deleted after delivery. We do not store your videos, scan your content, or use it for any purpose other than delivering the optimized file back to you. Your privacy is built into our architecture.
Common Privacy Myths Debunked
- Myth: "Airplane mode lets you view Status without being seen." Fact: Your view will be registered when you reconnect to the internet.
- Myth: "Deleting a contact hides your Status from them." Fact: If they still have your number saved, they can still see your Status unless you use privacy settings.
- Myth: "Status privacy settings apply retroactively." Fact: Changes only apply to future Status updates, not past ones.
Take control of your WhatsApp Status privacy today. Review your settings and choose the visibility level that works best for you.
